1301‐49 He was one of the leading encyclopedic scholars of the Mamluk period. He was born and died in Damascus. He served as a teacher and judge in Cairo, Alexandria, and other places. He excelled in literature, history, geography, and scribal arts, and has written books in each field. His main achievement is the large geographical work, List of the Distances of the Roads in Various Countries, which provides detailed information on the regions of Egypt, Syria, and Hijaz of his time, as well as the various tribes of Mongolia, Turkey, and Kurdistan, and provides valuable information in a variety of descriptions, including topography, biographies, and natural history.
