Cherbourg - Cherbourg (English spelling)

A naval port city in the Manche department in northern France. Population 25,370 (1999). Located at the northern tip of the Normandy Peninsula, at the mouth of the River Livet and facing the English Channel, the city has a thriving mechanical engineering industry. It developed as an important naval port on the Atlantic coast and is protected by a long embankment built in the 18th and 19th centuries. Trade with the UK on the opposite shore and North and South America, as well as passenger transport to the UK, is active. There is an airfield in the eastern part of the city. It is also home to an atomic energy research center and a naval arsenal. It was liberated by the Allied forces in June 1944 during World War II, but suffered extensive damage from bombings. Being at the tip of the peninsula, land transport with other cities is hindered, industrialization has been slow, and the population has stagnated.
