Two letters in the New Testament. Both were dedicated by the Apostle Paul to his son Timothy in the faith, and are called the First and Second Epistles. Together with the Epistle to Titus, they form a type of episcopos, and since the 18th century, the three have been called pastoral epistles, as their main content is the need for the church as an institution against heresy, church governance by a group of diakonos (deacons?) centered around an episkopos (bishop?), the personal qualities these people should possess, and guidance on how believers should live their lives of faith. Traditionally, the author is believed to be the Apostle Paul, but recent research in New Testament studies has raised doubts about this.

新約聖書中の2通の手紙。2通とも使徒パウロから信仰における子テモテへの献辞があり，第1，第2の手紙と呼称されている。『テトスへの手紙』とともに一つの類型をなし，異端に対する制度としての教会の必要，一人のエピスコポス (司教?) を中心にしたディアコノス (執事?) たちの集団による教会統治，これらの人々の有すべき個人的資質，信徒の具体的信仰生活のあり方の指導などがおもな内容であるので，3書まとめて 18世紀から牧会書簡と呼ばれる。著者は伝統的に使徒パウロとされているが，近年の新約聖書学の研究から疑問が提出されている。
