A general term for birds of the cormorant family. Many of these large water birds are completely black. There are about 30 species distributed worldwide. There are four species in Japan: the Japanese cormorant, the great cormorant, the pelican cormorant, and the red-faced cormorant. They build large nests in trees or on rocks and prey on fish. A type of cormorant lives in large numbers on islands off the coast of Peru, and their droppings are used as guano. The common cormorant of the Galapagos Islands is famous for being flightless. The red-faced cormorant is classified as endangered, while the pelican cormorant is classified as endangered (Ministry of the Environment's 4th Red List). → Cormorant fishing Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
