Pepper tree
An evergreen tree of the Anacardiaceae family that grows to a height of 5-15 m and has drooping branches (illustration). Native to the tropical Andes. The leaves are alternate, odd-pinnate, compound, and about 25 cm long. The numerous leaflets are alternate, linear, narrowly lanceolate, 3-6 cm long, and 3-9 mm wide. The flowers are dioecious, and the terminal panicles are slightly drooping, 8-20 cm long. The white petals are obtuse, circular, and 2.5-3 mm long. The filaments are flat, and in the male flowers, they alternate between 1.5 mm and 8 mm long. The beautiful fruits are glossy red, pea-sized, and numerous in clusters.
