...However, some foreign literature scholars prefer the more faithful English term "humor." It is nearly impossible to discuss what humor is with academic rigor, and Louis Cazamian (1877-1965), a French English literature scholar who wrote the great work "The Development of English Humour" (1930-52), already published an essay in 1906 entitled "Why Humor Cannot Be Defined." Humor is not simply laughter, humor, or humor; it is complex and extremely contradictory, containing elements of "pathos."
