Film director. Born November 20, 1915 in Ujiyamada City, Mie Prefecture (now Ise City). He moved to Osaka at a young age and dropped out of Ichioka Commercial High School due to illness. In 1933 (Showa 8), he joined JO Studio in Kyoto and worked on animation film production. In 1937, JO merged with PCL Film Productions and others to become Toho Film Co., Ltd. (now Toho Co., Ltd.), and became an assistant director for feature films. After the Toho disputes following World War II, he moved to Shintoho, and directed the company's first film, Toho's One Thousand and One Nights (1947), while still an assistant director. His next film, Hana Hiraku (1948), was his first film after being promoted to director. He also attracted attention for his modern and light-hearted directing sense in melodramas such as 365 Nights (Tokyo Edition/Osaka Edition) (1948). His talent was particularly evident in urban romantic comedies and satirical comedies such as The Woman Who Touched My Feet (1952) and Poo-san (1953). He also demonstrated his sharp sense of cinema in literary films such as The Burmese Harp (1956), Burning (1958), Fires on the Plain (1959), and Brother (1960). His documentary Tokyo Olympiad (1965) had a unique perspective and unique images that had a major influence on subsequent sports documentaries. His serial film adaptations of Yokomizo Seishi's mystery novels, beginning with The Inugami Family (1976), were a huge commercial success. He is one of the great directors who led the rise of Japanese cinema after World War II. His other works include "Sasameyuki" (1983), "47 Ronin" (1994), and "Dora Heita" (2000). He was awarded the "Person of Cultural Merit" in 1994. He passed away on February 13, 2008, at the age of 92.
