Figg, J.

[The birth of modern boxing]
In the second half of the 17th century, records of fights using fists began to appear in English documents. Many of these were merely duels, but James Figg (c. 1695-1734), who was already famous for fighting with clubs and swords, established fist fighting as a form of combat and worked to popularize it. In 1719, he opened a "School of Self-Defense" in London, and as both owner and British champion, he is said to have refused no challengers and defeated them all.
