Shimada Shigetaro - Shimada Shigetaro
Born: September 24, 1883, Tokyo
[Died] June 7, 1976. Tokyo Navy officer. Graduated from the Naval Academy in 1904 and the Naval War College in 1915. From 1916 to 1923 he lived in Italy as a military attaché at the embassy. After serving as Chief of Staff of the Combined Fleet and Vice Chief of the Naval General Staff, he was promoted to Commander in Chief of the China Area Fleet and to Admiral in 1940. Shortly after becoming Commander in Chief of Yokosuka Naval District in 1941, he became Minister of Navy when the Tojo Hideki cabinet was formed. In 1944 he also served as Chief of the Naval General Staff, but resigned from this position one month after the Tojo cabinet fell. After World War II, he was sentenced to life imprisonment as a Class A war criminal at the Tokyo Trials, but was released on parole in 1955 and pardoned in 1958.
