[Died] January 11, 1994. Genolier Born in Vienna, he was a philosopher of science who was active in the United States. He studied at the Institute for German Theater Innovation in Weimar, but later studied history and natural sciences in many areas at the University of Vienna, where he came into contact with physicists and philosophers who followed the traditions of the Vienna Circle, such as Popper and Wittgenstein. In 1952 he went to England to continue his philosophical studies under Popper, and in 1957 he began lecturing in philosophy at the University of Bristol. In 1958 he moved to the University of California, Berkeley, and also served as a professor at the ETH Zurich. He is known as a radical relativist in the philosophy of science, and his books include "The Challenge of Method" (1975) and "The Wisdom of a Free Society" (1979).

ウィーンに生れ，アメリカで活躍した科学哲学者。ワイマールのドイツ演劇革新研究所に学んだが，その後ウィーン大学で歴史学のほか自然科学を多方面にわたって学び，ポパー，ウィトゲンシュタインらのウィーン学団の伝統を引く物理学者，哲学者と接触するようになった。 1952年イギリスに渡りポパーのもとで哲学の研究を続け，57年ブリストル大学で哲学の講義を始める。 58年からカリフォルニア大学バークリー校に移り，チューリヒ工科大学の教授も兼任。科学哲学における過激な相対主義者として知られ，著書に『方法への挑戦』 (1975) ，『自由社会の知』 (79) などがある。
