…In 1854 (Ansei 1), he joined the Saga Domain's refining department, and together with Nakamura Kisuke and Ishiguro Kanji, he created what is said to be Japan's first model steam locomotive. In 1873 (Meiji 6), he moved to Tokyo, and in 1875, he opened Japan's first privately run machinery factory, Tanaka Seisakusho, in Ginza. This was later passed on to his adopted son, Tanaka Hisashige (childhood name Kaneko Daikichi), and became Shibaura Seisakusho, which would grow into the current Toshiba.
