It can also be read as "choyakunin." In the Edo period, this was the general term for officials who worked on the administrative affairs of towns in the Shogunate's territories and feudal domains, and they were of the townspeople's status. They were under the control of the town magistrates appointed by the Shogunate or feudal domain, and their structure and names differed from town to town. In Edo, under the cho-noshiyori were the cho-naoshu (town headman), tsukigyo-ji (monthly affairs officer), and scribes, while in Osaka, under the so-noshiyori were the cho-noshiyori and machi-dai (town councilors), and in Settsu and Sakai, under the so-noshiyori were the toshiyori and tsukigyo-ji (monthly affairs officer). In Kyoto, the tsukigyo-ji and nen-gyoji (monthly affairs officer) elected by mutual votes among the toshiyori of each town were in charge of town administration, and there was also the cho-dai (town councilor) who was dedicated to town affairs.
