It originated as a family dog in France. It was bred by crossbreeding a small bulldog, which was not highly regarded in England, with a local dog from Normandy. It was a common dog that was raised by factory workers and craftsmen who immigrated to the region in the mid-19th century, and has a robust build similar to that of a bulldog, but has upright ears with rounded tips that look very much like those of a bat. Its coat is short and smooth, and it comes in a variety of colors, including brindle (tiger fur), fawn (brown), brindle and white, and white.
