This river originates at the foot of Mt. Duryu in the Masikryeong Mountains in central Korea, merges with the Han River, and empties into Ganghwa Bay in the Yellow Sea. Its total length is 254 km, and its drainage area is 8,118 km2. It flows south-southwest in the upper reaches, forming a steep canyon, and near Icheon it merges with the Gomishuncheon (114 km) and turns southeast. To the west of Anxia, it merges with the Pyeongancheon (81 km) and turns south-southeast, and near Majeon-ri it merges with the Handamjucheon (130 km), turns southwest, and merges with the mouth of the Han River and empties into Ganghwa Bay. The annual precipitation in this basin is around 1,200 mm, but more than 50% of the total flow is concentrated in the summer. The navigable distance is 125 km from the mouth.
