1835‐1920 Icelandic poet and playwright. Born to a peasant family in Skógar, he later studied at the Latin School and the seminary in Reykjavik. He traveled abroad many times while working as a pastor in parishes around the country. He wrote many lyric poems, one of which became the Icelandic national anthem. His play The Exile (1864) is regarded as the first romantic work in Iceland. He is also known as a translator of Shakespeare and other works.
