Alost is an industrial city in the northwest of Belgium, and the capital of the southeastern part of the province of East Flanders. Its French name is Alost. It has a population of 76,382 (2002). It is a distribution center for agricultural products overlooking the Dendal River, a tributary of the Schelde River, and is also a center for the cut flower trade. Historically, it was famous for its woolen textile industry, but after World War II, its main industries were synthetic fibers, Western goods, rubber, plastics, and beer brewing. The city hall, built in the early 13th century, is the oldest city hall building in Belgium. In 1473, Thierry Martens established the first printing shop in Flanders. In the 18th century, it was the center of the Flanders region. [Tamiko Kawakami] [Reference] |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
