Fudaraku Crossing the Sea

Japanese:
Fudaraku Crossing the Sea

Crossing the sea alone by boat to reach Potalaka Pure Land. Potalaka is a mountain on the southern coast of India, where Kannon Bodhisattva (Kannon Bosatsu) is said to reside. Just as the faith in Amida prays for paradise, the faith in Kannon prays for rebirth in Mount Potalaka, where Kannon Bodhisattva resides. The Azuma Kagami reports that in 1233 (Tenpuku 1), a vassal of the Shogun, Shimokawabe Yukihide, crossed the sea to Potalaka from the coast of Nachi in Kishu. He built a cabin on his boat, nailed it from the outside, loaded it with food for 30 days, and set off alone. The Fudarakusan Temple is located in this area, and it is said that the head priest there crossed the sea when he turned 60. Behind the temple is Mount Nachi, which has been worshipped as a replica of Mount Potalaka.

The idea of going to the sea from Potalaka is unique to our country, and it reflects the Japanese concept of the gods. At its core is the idea that after death, the soul returns to Tokoyo no Kuni, the land of eternity where ancestors live, located beyond the sea. This idea is linked to the belief in Kannon.
