Actor and film director. Born in Kyoto Prefecture. His father is the film director Mansaku Itami. His real name is Takehiko Ikeuchi. He graduated from Matsuyama Minami High School in 1954 (Showa 29). He joined Daiei as an actor and made his debut in 1960 in the lead role of "Hate, Hate, Hate," and thereafter played mainly supporting roles. He appeared in American films such as "55 Days in Beijing" in 1963 and "Lord Jim" in 1965, and became active internationally. His first film as a director, "The Funeral," was a hit in 1984, for which he won the New Artist Award from the Arts Encouragement Prize. Since then, he has directed a number of unique works, including "Tanpopo" and "The Taxing Woman." In 1992 (Heisei 4), he was attacked by a thug and seriously injured immediately after the premiere of his own film "Minbo no Onna." He is also known as an essayist, and his books include "Europe Boredom Diary" and "Women!". His wife is the actress Nobuko Miyamoto. December 20, 1997: Suicide.
