…They are concentrated in the northern half of Kyushu, with three in Fukuoka Prefecture, including Iwatoyama Tomb, nine in Kumamoto Prefecture, including Chibusan Tomb, and two in Oita Prefecture, including Usuzuka Tomb. The stone horse (made of horned andesite) at Ishiumagatani Tomb in Tottori Prefecture is also included as an exception. The Chikugo no Kuni Fudoki describes the tomb built by Tsukushi no Kimi Iwai during his lifetime as being surrounded on all four sides by 60 stone figures and stone shields arranged in alternating rows, and also describes a scene in which stone figures were placed in a separate area to the northeast of the tomb, depicting a naked thief lying on the ground in front of an official standing there, with four stone boars he had stolen nearby. It also describes three stone horses, a three-room stone hall, and a two-room stone storehouse. …

...The prefectural capital city in the eastern part of Tottori Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1889. Its population is 146,330 (1995). The city area is made up of the Tottori Plains downstream of the Sendai River and the surrounding mountainous areas, and plays a central role in the prefecture's politics, economy, and culture. The central city area, located in a low-lying delta on the east bank of the Sendai River, was the castle town of the Ikeda clan in the early modern period, and was formed by rerouting the downstream Fukuro River and filling in ponds and marshes. Tottori Prefecture was established in 1871, but for five years from 1875, the entire prefecture was under the jurisdiction of Shimane Prefecture, and the center of the city was moved to Matsue, causing the city of Tottori to become temporarily deserted. ...
