… In the early 19th century, attempts were made throughout Europe to design an instrument smaller than the church pipe organ but with a similar tone. Various keyboard instruments with free reeds were prototyped and given names such as the orgue expressif and aeoline. The Frenchman Alexandre François Debain (1809-77) created a four-stop instrument that was a compilation of these, which he named the harmonium and obtained a patent for in 1840. …
