A marine animal belonging to the order Coelenterata, class Hydrozoa. It forms colonies that are dark brown and reach a height of about 8 cm, and are named after their shape, which resembles a cypress twig. The trunk has many alternate branches that spread out on one plane. Hydropods that contain individual worms are lined up on the trunk and branches, and the mouth edges of these hydropods are smooth and have a single lid. In addition, reproductive pods that contain gametes are formed in roughly two vertical rows on one side of the trunk, which are spindle-shaped with small, round mouths and about five prominent longitudinal ribs on the walls. They are common in shallow waters in northern Honshu and various parts of Hokkaido, and can be found attached to rocks and other objects.
