The region that stretches from east to west along the main ridge is also called the Himalayas. The area has varying elevations, from the foothills at 200m above sea level to Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world at 8,848m. The foothills are subtropical, but the lower mountains, basins, and valleys are temperate and then alpine (cold) zones, leading to snowy regions.
