African tulip tree

Japanese: カエンボク（英語表記）African tulip‐tree

An evergreen tree of the Bignoniaceae family native to tropical Africa, it grows to a height of 20 m. The leaves are large, odd-pinnate compound, opposite, and reach 40 cm in length, usually with 3-6 leaflets. The leaflets are ovate-oblong, 4-12 cm long, papery, pointed at the tip, not sawtoothed at the edge, and have short hairs on the veins on the underside. Dense corymbs sprout at the ends of the branches, and produce many large upward-facing flowers. The corolla is bell-shaped, 7-8 cm long, red or orange-red with orange edges, and a recurved mouth. The calyx stores a large amount of water and is initially oblanceolate and sickle-curved, but later splits open at the front in a flame-like shape to release water, 5-7 cm long.
