The Marx Brothers are an American comedy team. They consisted of five brothers: Chico (1881-1964), Harpo (1888-1964), Groucho (1890-1977), Gummo (1897-1977) (who later left the group), and Zeppo (1901-1979) (who later became a manager). All were born in New York. They debuted in the world of vaudeville as a musical team, and eventually gained popularity on Broadway. They made their film debut in The Coconuts (1929). They appeared in a total of 13 films, and took the world by storm with their slapstick comedies, which featured nonsensical plots that made the most of each member's individuality. His representative works include The Beasts (1930) directed by V. Heerman, I Am a Duck (1933) directed by L. McCarey, and The Opera (1935) directed by S. Wood. In the late 1960s, his innovative sense of humor and anarchic humor were reevaluated. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
