Also called the gabelle. A tax on salt before the French Revolution. Gabelle originally meant a general consumption tax, but since the 15th century it has come to refer to the salt tax. It was a consumption tax on salt, but also a state control over its production, distribution, and consumption. As a tax on daily life, it was divided into high salt tax regions, low salt tax regions, and tax-free regions, and the tax rates varied greatly from region to region, so it was seen as a symbol of bad taxation and often caused popular rebellions.
