In 1769, about 150 years after modern observations began, A. Wilson discovered that when sunspots are near the edge of the sun, the penumbra on the central side of the sun becomes narrower than the edge side or is almost invisible, and he thought that this was because the sunspot is depressed lower than the surrounding area. Current measurements suggest that this depression is about 500 to 1000 km. …
