It is a member of the Rhinoceros family of the Perissodactyla order of the Mammalia class. It is found from the Assam region of India to the wetlands of Nepal. It has only one horn on its nose, and is sometimes called the one-horned rhinoceros. It is 1.7 to 1.9 meters tall, and its skin is thick and has armor-like folds. For this reason, it is also known as the armored rhinoceros. It eats reed leaves, twigs, and other vegetation. There are only a small number of them living in the wild, with an estimated 2,400 (2002).

Japanese:

哺乳(ほにゅう)綱奇蹄(きてい)目サイ科の動物。インドのアッサム地方からネパールの湿地帯に分布する。鼻上の角(つの)は1本のみで、イッカクサイとよばれることもある。体高1.7～1.9メートル、皮膚は厚く、鎧(よろい)のようなひだがある。このため、ヨロイサイという別名もある。アシの葉や小枝、その他の草木類を食べる。野生での生息数は少なく、2400頭といわれる（2002）。
