An early battle of the American Revolution. On June 17, 1775, British regular troops launched three frontal attacks on American militia troops camped on a hill on the Charlestown Peninsula outside Boston, finally capturing the hill after suffering heavy casualties. The militia fought on equal terms with the regular troops and tormented them, which greatly boosted American morale and became a symbol of patriotic action. The battle actually took place on Breed's Hill, not Bunker Hill. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
