Sapporo Agricultural College

Japanese:
Sapporo Agricultural College

The predecessor of Hokkaido University. It was established in 1872 (Meiji 5) as the Hokkaido Development Agency Provisional School at Zojoji Temple in Shiba, Tokyo, as a proposal by Colonization Agency advisor Capron and others, with the aim of training leaders for the development of Hokkaido. It moved to Sapporo in 1875 and was called Sapporo School, and the following year, in 1876, it was renamed Sapporo Agricultural College. Clark, the president of Massachusetts Agricultural College in the United States, was invited to serve as vice principal, and the foundation was laid for Japan's first higher agricultural education institution. The undergraduate course lasted four years, with a total enrollment of 50 students, and students were required to work for the Hokkaido Development Agency for five years after graduation. In addition, a preparatory school was also established. The curriculum included agriculture, natural sciences in general, humanities, social sciences, and military education, and placed emphasis on the harmony between theory and practice, aiming not only for agricultural education but also for modern character education. Clark's influence led to the emergence of talented people such as Kanzo Uchimura and Inazo Nitobe. Clark's famous words, "Boys, be ambitious for the attainment of all that a man ought to be," are well known. In 1907 (Meiji 40), it became the College of Agriculture of Tohoku Imperial University, in 1918 (Taisho 7), Hokkaido Imperial University, and in 1949 (Showa 24), Hokkaido University. The Sapporo Clock Tower, known as a symbol of Sapporo, was relocated from the Sapporo Agricultural College Martial Arts Hall, which was completed in 1878 (remodeled in 1881).

クラークの残した“Boys, be ambitious for the attainment of all that a man ought to be.”(青年よ、人間の本分をなすべく大望を抱け)のことばは有名である。
