Chronic progressive muscular atrophy was reported in 1886 by JM Charcot and P. Marie (1853-1940) in France, followed in the same year by HH Tooth (1856-1926) in England. There are dominant genetic types, sex-linked recessive genetic types, and sporadic cases. Several genetic abnormalities in myelin sheath formation-related proteins have been identified as the cause. Before the age of 20, weakness and atrophy occur primarily in the extensor muscles of the distal part of the lower limbs, such as the toes and feet, which then spreads to the proximal and distal parts of the upper limbs, and sensory loss also occurs.

1886年フランスのJ.M.シャルコーとマリーP.Marie(1853‐1940)，ついで同年イギリスのトゥースH.H.Tooth(1856‐1926)によって報告された慢性進行性筋萎縮症で，優性遺伝型，伴性劣性遺伝型，および孤発例が存在する。原因として髄鞘構成関連タンパク質の遺伝子異常がいくつか判明している。20歳未満に潜在性に足指，足など下肢遠位部の伸展筋群優位に脱力と萎縮を生じ，やがて近位部や上肢遠位部にも及び，さらに知覚低下も加わる。
