The capital of the Central African Republic in central Africa. It is a river port city on the Ubangi River, a tributary of the Congo River, which flows along the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire) to the south of the country. It has a population of 622,000 (1999 estimate). Bangui is literally the political and economic center of Central Africa, a landlocked country with no seaports, and has a regular shipping route to Brazzaville in the Republic of the Congo. Exports from here include timber, coffee, cocoa, and diamonds. Bangui means "rapid current" in the local language. In 1890, the French army, which had been sailing up the Ubangi River, gave up on the river and built a base here. This was the origin of Bangui, and it later became the center of the Ubangi-Shari colony.
