Ishinomaki [city] - Ishinomaki

Japanese: 石巻[市] - いしのまき
Ishinomaki [city] - Ishinomaki
A city in eastern Miyagi Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1933. The city center developed on both banks of the Kitakami River estuary, and the Ishinomaki Line and Senseki Line pass through it. In the early modern period, it flourished as a shipping port for rice and seafood for the Sendai Domain. It ended its role as a trading port when it was separated from the Tohoku Main Line that opened in the mid-Meiji period, and became a base for fishing grounds off Kinkazan, along with Shiogama and Kesennuma. Since the 1960s, Ishinomaki Industrial Port and New Fishing Port have been opened as the northern base of the Sendai Bay area, which has been designated a new industrial city, and it is a fishing industrial city with thriving industries such as seafood processing, shipbuilding, and pulp. Watanaba in the east is a fishing port on the west coast of Mt. Mangokuura, where seaweed and oysters are cultivated. Nagahama Beach is located in the western part of Watanaba. In April 2005, the towns of Kahoku, Ogatsu, Kanan, Monou, and Kitakami in Monou County, and the town of Oshika in Oshika County were incorporated into the city. The city sustained damage during the Great East Japan Earthquake. Area: 554.58 km2 . Population: 160,826 (2010).
