904‐975 A Chinese Buddhist from the early Northern Song Dynasty of the Five Dynasties. Also known simply as Enju. His surname was Wang, and his pen names were Chongxuan and Baoyizi. He was from Yuhang, Zhejiang Province. He was ordained at the age of 28 by Suigan Reisan, and later succeeded Tendai Tokusho as the third patriarch of the Hogan sect. He practiced both Zen and Nembutsu, and was revered by both laypeople and monks. In China, the Hogan sect declined during the Song dynasty, but spread in Goryeo. His works include the famous Sokyoroku (completed in 961), which blends various Buddhist sects with Zen, as well as Banzen Doukishu and Yuishinketu.
