Yin and Zhou Art

It covers the period from the Shang and Zhou dynasties of China to the unification of the country by Qin. In the beginning, when the Xia had the virtue of ruling the world, distant countries presented drawings of objects and cast tripods into which the drawings were carved (Zuo Zhuan). This is a story about when the King of Chu asked the Zhou dynasty about the importance of the tripods. Careful research is still being conducted into the existence of the Xia dynasty. From the appearance of pottery from the Erlitou Lower Culture in Yanshi, Henan Province, it is still quite possible that the Xia were the first to cast bronze vessels, as ancient history tells us, but the oldest bronze vessels discovered to date are from the early Shang period, discovered during the Erlitou Upper Culture.

中国の殷･周王朝の時代から秦による統一までを扱う。はじめ夏（か）に天下を治める徳があったとき，遠方の国々は物の図を献じ，鼎（てい）を鋳てその図を彫り込んだ(《左氏伝》)という。楚王が周室の鼎（かなえ）の軽重を問うたときの話である。夏の実在についてはなお慎重な調査研究が進められている。河南省偃師（えんし）二里頭下層文化期の土器の様相から，古史の伝えるごとく，夏が青銅器の最初の鋳造者であった可能性はなお十分残されているが，現在発見される最古の青銅器は二里頭上層文化期発見の殷代初期のものである。
