[Died] April 25, 1938, Berningerode. German legal philosopher. A leading Neo-Kantian scholar, he brought fresh air to the world of legal philosophy in the 20th century. Since 1882, he has been professor of legal philosophy at universities in Marburg and elsewhere. In his major work, Wirtschaft und Recht (1896) (Economics and Law), he criticized the materialist view of history from the standpoint of social idealism, and in Die Lehre von dem richtigen Rechte (1902) (Theory of True Law), he established the idea of natural law, whose content changes. Lehrbuch der Rechtsphilosophie (22) is a summary of his arguments.
