A general term for birds in the family Capitonidae (barbet) of the order Picidae. Birds in this family have thick, pointed, conical beaks, large heads, short necks, legs, and tails, and stocky bodies. They have antidactyl legs. Overall length is 10-30cm. Their plumage is a vibrant mix of bright blue, green, yellow, and red with black, white, and gray, and in many species, males and females are the same color. They live alone in pairs in trees in tropical regions and rarely come down to the ground. They are generally herbivorous, climbing from branch to branch to feed on fruit, buds, flowers, etc.

キツツキ目ゴシキドリ科Capitonidaeの鳥の総称。この科の鳥は先のとがった太い円錐形のくちばしをもち,頭が大きく,くび,脚,尾が短く,ずんぐりした体つきをしている。脚は対趾足(たいしそく)である。全長10~30cm。羽色は鮮やかな青色,緑色,黄色,赤色に黒色,白色,灰色の混じったはでな色彩で,雌雄は多くの種で同色である。熱帯地方の樹上に単独かつがいですみ,地上に降りることはほとんどない。一般に植物食で,枝から枝を伝って果実,木の芽,花などを採食する。
