A Catholic movement that opposed the dogma of papal infallibility (1870) of the First Vatican Council, did not recognize the legal primacy of the Pope, and advocated a restoration to the one church that existed before the East-West Schism, based on the teachings of the Seven Universal Ecumenical Councils of the ancient church. While it was aligned with the Old Catholic Church of Utrecht in the Netherlands, which had already been formed in the early 18th century, after 1873 it established independent churches in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the United States, and other countries under the influence of German church historian J. Deringer. Since 1931 it has aligned with the Anglican Church and actively worked to reunite the churches.
