Jules‐Antoine Castagnary
1830‐88
French art critic and journalist. Born in Saintes. He was friends with Courbet and other realist painters, and eventually became a strong defender of Impressionism in the mid-1860s. He wrote anti-Academy articles for magazines such as La Liberté, L'Artiste, and Siècle. He continued to praise the new art of Realism and Impressionism in his Salon reviews from 1857 to 1879. He entered politics during the Third Republic, and served as director of the Fine Arts Bureau from 1887.

フランスの美術批評家,ジャーナリスト。サントに生まれる。クールベら写実主義の画家たちと親交があり,やがて1860年代半ばに印象派の強力な擁護者となる。《ラ・リベルテ(自由)》《ラルティスト(芸術家)》《シエークル(世紀)》などの雑誌に反アカデミー的な記事を書いた。サロン評は57年から79年までで,ここでも写実主義・印象派系統の新しい芸術を賛美し続けた。第三共和政時代に政界に入り,87年より美術局長を務めた。
