1830‐88 French art critic and journalist. Born in Saintes. He was friends with Courbet and other realist painters, and eventually became a strong defender of Impressionism in the mid-1860s. He wrote anti-Academy articles for magazines such as La Liberté, L'Artiste, and Siècle. He continued to praise the new art of Realism and Impressionism in his Salon reviews from 1857 to 1879.
