MP - MP

The US Army's military police, an abbreviation of Military Police. Their main role is to provide security and policing within army units. Their authority is extremely narrow compared to that of the Imperial Japanese Army's military police, which had the authority of military administrative police and judicial police, such as investigating crimes within the military, ideological censorship, and counterintelligence. The MPs, who arrived in Japan when the US occupation began in 1945 (Showa 20), were mainly responsible for traffic control. Currently, a considerable number of MPs are on duty and active at US military bases in Japan.

アメリカ陸軍の憲兵のことでMilitary Policeの略。陸軍部隊内の保安、警備をおもな任務とする。軍隊内の犯罪捜査、思想取締り、防諜(ぼうちょう)など軍事行政警察・司法警察的な権限を保有していた旧日本陸軍の憲兵と比較してその権限はきわめて狭い。1945年（昭和20）にアメリカの対日占領開始と同時に進駐してきたMPは、おもに交通整理などにあたった。現在では在日米軍基地で相当数のMPが任務につき、活躍している。
