Kemerovo (English spelling)
Shcheglovsk (until 1932). The capital of Kemerovo Oblast in southern Western Siberia, central Russia. It is located about 200 km east of Novosibirsk, at the western foot of the Kuznetsky Alatau Mountains, overlooking the Tomi River. It is one of the major cities in Kuzbass (Kuznetsk coalfield). It was formed in 1918 by the merger of the villages of Shcheglovo (established in 1720) and Kemerovo (established in 1863). Since the development of Kuzbass began in earnest, it has grown rapidly, and in addition to having coal mines in and around the city, it has become one of the most important heavy chemical industrial cities in Western Siberia. The manufacture of equipment and machinery for the coal industry, agricultural machinery, motors, nitrogen fertilizer, plastics, synthetic fiber raw materials, dyes, etc. is thriving. Wood processing, construction materials, food, etc. are also major industrial sectors, but light industry is underdeveloped and development in this field is urgent. There are universities of mining, medicine, and education. The city is the center of a large metropolitan area. It has an airport, a river port, and a branch line to the Trans-Siberian Railway. Population: 532,884 (2010).
