...Its English name is butterfly ray, which is also named after its wide body plates. There are about 10 species in the world, but two species, G. japonica (illustration) and G. poecilura , are found in the waters near Japan. The spectacled butterfly, which was previously considered a separate species, has been found to be a synonym of the butterfly ray.
