Custer - George Armstrong Custer

American soldier. He is famous for being the commander of the 7th Cavalry, which was surrounded and annihilated by the American Indian Union Army during the Western expansion era. He was born in Ohio. After graduating from the West Point Military Academy in 1861, he served on the Union side during the American Civil War, and was promoted to major general of the volunteer army for his outstanding military achievements. After the war, he served as a lieutenant colonel in the 7th Cavalry, and was responsible for the defense of forts throughout the west. In 1875, the discovery of gold in the Black Hills triggered the Second Sioux War. Custer joined the Indian punitive force led by General Alfred Howe Terry (1827-1890), and on June 25, 1876, he encountered a combined army of Sioux and Cheyenne on the Little Bighorn River in what is now Montana. He launched a reckless attack on the army, and was surrounded by the Indian Union Army led by Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, and was killed in battle along with all 264 of his men.
