Skier. Born in Kunashiri Island, Hokkaido. From the age of three, he received special training in skiing from his parents. In 1953, he graduated from Rikkyo University and studied abroad at Dartmouth College in the United States. In the United States, he won the U.S. Collegiate Ski Championships six times and the U.S. Championships five times, and in 1957 he became the best skier on the U.S. Ski Team, and received the Dartmouth Trophy upon graduation from the university. In 1952, he participated in the Oslo Winter Olympics. In 1956, he participated in the Cortina d'Ampezzo Winter Olympics, winning a silver medal in the slalom. He served as a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) from 1982 to 2011, and was appointed as an IOC director twice during that time, from 1987 to 1991 and from 1996 to 2000. He also served as a member of the International Ski Federation's Alpine Committee, the Far East representative of the World Cup Committee, and a training advisor for the All Japan Ski Federation.
