After Bach's death, as religious dramatic music gradually shifted from churches to concert halls, passion music in its original sense fell into disuse, and oratorios based on the Passion of Jesus came to dominate.

…JS Bach's work (BWV244) is especially famous and is considered to be the pinnacle of Protestant church music. It was composed based on a libretto by Picander (real name Christian Friedrich Henrici, 1700-64), which is based on chapters 26-27 of the Gospel of Matthew and features Lutheran hymns (chorales) and lyrical religious poetry. It premiered on Good Friday, April 15, 1729 (some say April 11, 1727), at the Thomas Church in Leipzig. The work consists of 68 songs in two parts, and movingly depicts scenes such as the prophecy of the cross, the Last Supper, the prayer in Gethsemane, the arrest, the trial, the hill of Golgotha, and the death and burial of Christ, with the gospel reader (tenor) singing at the center, as well as dramatic choruses, introspective arias, and tasteful chorales, sharply questioning the meaning of Christ's Passion. …
