Foreign income tax exemption method

…International double taxation occurs in various cases. For example, if a Japanese corporation earns business income in the United States or receives investment income such as dividends and interest sourced in the United States, the corporation is taxed in the United States (source taxation) and also in Japan (resident taxation) on the income. In such cases, double taxation can be avoided by the resident country waiving its right to tax foreign-source income (foreign income tax exemption method), or by the resident country including the foreign-source income in taxable income and taxing it, but deducting the tax paid in the source country from the calculated tax amount (foreign tax credit). The former is adopted by France, the Netherlands, and other Western European countries, and the latter by Japan, the United States, Germany, etc. in their domestic tax laws and confirmed in tax treaties. …
