950?-1022 A monk at the Abbey of St. Gall in Switzerland. To distinguish himself from the other monks of the same surname, he was given the epithet Labeo (Lip Major) or Teutonicus (German). He translated and annotated the basic classics of medieval scholastic arts (such as the works of Boethius, Martianus Capella, Aristotle, and the Psalms) into fluent prose for the monastic school, making ingenious and creative use of the still immature Old High German language, and it can be said that he elevated Old High German to the level of an academic language.
