Japanese: 衛生検査技師 - えいせいけんさぎし（英語表記）medical technologist

This qualification is given to those who pass the national examination among graduates of medical laboratory technician schools established by the Medical Laboratory Technician Law of 1959. It refers to professionals who perform physiological, pathological, bacteriological, and biochemical tests on blood, urine, and other samples. However, a revision to the law in 1970 established the qualification of clinical laboratory technicians, who can also perform physiological tests that require direct contact with patients, such as electrocardiograms and electroencephalograms, and blood sampling. As a result, the national medical laboratory technician examination was abolished in 1977, and only the national clinical laboratory technician examination, which includes the medical laboratory technician qualification, has been held since then.

1959年制定の衛生検査技師法によってつくられた衛生検査技師学校の卒業生のうち，国家試験合格者に与えられる資格。血液や尿などの検体について，生理学，病理学，細菌学，生化学などの検査にあたる専門職をいう。しかし，心電図とか脳波のように患者に直接接触して行う生理学的検査や，採血なども担当することができる臨床検査技師の資格が 70年の法改正により設定された。これに伴って 77年から衛生検査技師国家試験は廃止され，衛生検査技師の資格を包含する臨床検査技師の国家試験のみが行われるようになった。
