Russian novelist. His real name was Smidovich. Born into a family of doctors, he graduated from the Faculty of Letters at St. Petersburg University, then went on to Derpt University and became a doctor. He began his writing career while working at a hospital in St. Petersburg. After writing novellas such as "Without a Way" (1895) and "The Turning Point" (1902), which depict the inner world of intellectuals at the turn of the century, he established his literary reputation with "A Doctor's Notes" (1901), which was based on his own experiences. In the 1900s, he joined the literary circle "Wednesday Society" and participated in Gorky's collection of essays "Znanie", and also participated in the Russo-Japanese War and wrote a war memoir. He is also known for his detailed biographical studies of Pushkin and Gogol.
