...The phenomenon in which light is shone on a substance, and the substance absorbs the light, generating free electrons. The free electrons emitted by light irradiation are called photoelectrons. The photoelectric effect includes the external photoelectric effect, in which photoelectrons are emitted from a solid surface, and photoionization, in which photoelectrons are emitted from atoms and other objects, causing them to ionize.
