...This work depicts the story of Shizuma, the son of Wada Yukiie, a chief retainer of the Uesugi family, who, with the help of his sister's husband, Karagi Masaemon, kills his father's enemy, Sawai Matagorō. It is based largely on the kabuki play Igagoe Norigakegatsupa, written by Nakagawa Kamesuke and performed at the Osaka Arashiza Theater in December 1776 (An'ei 5), which was adapted into a puppet theater play at the Osaka Toyotake Konoyoshi Theater in March of the following year. However, as the protagonists move in pursuit of the enemy, the plot of various tragedies involving the obligations and affections of various people unfold one after another along the Tokaido road gives this work its own unique charm. Among these, the Numazu section (the sixth act), in which Kumosuke Heisaku, the father of Shizuma's lover Oyome, commits suicide to find out the whereabouts of Tekimata Goro from his son, the kimono shop owner Jubei, whom he has met again for the first time in a long time, and the Okazaki section (the eighth act), in which Masaemon proves his righteousness by killing his own son in front of his former teacher Yamada Kobei, have been performed repeatedly and are well-made works.

From [Nakagawa Kamesuke]

He studied under the first Namiki Shōzō and began writing plays, making his first appearance in a medium-sized play in 1771 (Meiwa 8). For about 15 years from Shōzō's death in 1773 (An'ei 2), he wrote over 40 Kyogen plays, mainly as a stand-up playwright for medium-sized plays. He excelled in period pieces, and five of them, "The Tale of Ise" (1775), "The Iga-goe Ride and Raincoat" (1776), "Meiboku: Sendai-hagi" (1777), "The Tale of Kagamiyama" (1780), and "The Tenka-jaya-mura" (The Tenka-jaya-mura, 1781), all enjoyed huge success, with "Iga-goe" running for 145 days, an unprecedented success, and were repeatedly performed after their premieres. Kamesuke, who was able to write purely Kabuki-kyogen plays, is considered the ancestor of Middle Age Kabuki composers.

From Kazuya Yoshida

…He was the founder of the Osaka storytelling revival, praised in books such as Naniwa Kenbun Zatsugo as a master of unparalleled performances of all time, and like a real play. His specialty, Iga's revenge, was adapted by Nakano Kamesuke and performed in Osaka's theatres for 140 days from 1776 (An'ei 5) to the following year. A part of his knowledge is known from his simple commentary book Wakan Gunsho Yoran (1770), which has been reprinted many times. …
